The Future for Genetic Services
At CRGH we are always looking forwards to future developments and how they can help our patients. Advances in genetics are happening very quickly and it is exciting but sometimes difficult to fully understand the usefulness of impact of each breakthrough.
At CRGH we strive to offer you the most up to date technologies and tests. However, we also known that sometimes the advancements in technology outpace our ability to interpret and understand the data it produces. That is why, at CRGH you can trust us to take a thoughtful and thorough approach to new developments and their integration into our services.
For example, whole genome sequencing (WGS) has matured to the point that it has become affordable for individuals to purchase. The challenge is to understand and make use of the value this knowledge brings to the patient and the physician. The value of an individual genome at this point in time is potentially quite limited especially if the individual is relatively healthy – we get a great deal of data, but not a great amount of useful information that can be acted upon.
We continue to work with academic and research institutions, and intend to offer WGS as soon as we are satisfied it provides useful information on genetic risk and treatment options.
