What is the process for egg freezing?

When a woman decides that she would like to freeze her eggs, she can contact the unit and book an appointment with one of our consultants. Usually she will have to undergo, what we call ovarian stimulation in order for the ovaries to produce more than one egg. During the stimulation process the woman will be monitored regularly. As soon as the consultant thinks that she is ready for the eggs to be harvested, she will be subjected to a transvaginal oocyte collection as we call it. This is a procedure that involves sedation and is a procedure that the woman can go home in the afternoon. After the eggs are harvested they will be passed on into the lab where we will make sure that they will be frozen at the right time. The oocytes will be stored in liquid nitrogen until the patient decides that they want to use them.
