What is a 3D SIS?

A 3D Saline Infusion Sonography, or 3D SIS, is an investigation which allows your consultant to visualise your uterine cavity in excellent detail, revealing any anatomical abnormalities as well as any scar tissue, polyps, or fibroids which may impact your reproductive health.

By understanding these factors, your consultant can detect potential fertility problems, recommend next steps and minimise the impact of any anatomical abnormalities on your future efforts to conceive.

What does a 3D SIS involve?

A small, flexible tube is placed in the uterus via the vagina. An ultrasound probe is then placed in the vagina, while a saline solution (a sterile fluid which expands and holds the uterus walls apart) is introduced to the uterus to provide greater detail. This step makes a 3D SIS scan different from a transvaginal ultrasound. At this stage, you may experience cramps or bloating, but most patients don’t experience too much discomfort. The results can then be seen on the ultrasound screen in real-time, which your consultant can then use to recommend a fertility treatment plan tailored to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a 3D Saline Infusion Sonography?

Our consultants will advise you if you need a 3D Saline Infusion Sonography.

When is a 3D Saline Infusion Sonography carried out?

You will usually have a 3D SIS scan after your period finishes but prior to ovulation to avoid accidentally carrying out the procedure during early pregnancy. This is usually from day six to thirteen of your menstrual cycle.

What are the benefits of 3D Saline Infusion Sonography?

• Knowledge and detail
A 3D sis scan results in very clear ultrasound images. This can very clearly highlight any uterus abnormalities, such as polyps, and helps you and your consultant to make more informed decisions about the next steps in your fertility journey.

• Safety
3D SIS scans are known to be very safe. It is very rare that you would contract an infection from this scan but we do provide some antibiotics on the day of the procedure to further minimise that risk.

• Minimal preparation
We recommend that patients take a painkiller like paracetamol ahead of a 3D SIS to reduce any of the mild discomfort which you might experience during the procedure.
