Predictive Genetic Testing
Dominant genes are those which, if you carry a mutation in a single copy of the gene pair, you will be at risk of developing symptoms of that condition. A well-known example of a dominant genetic condition is Huntington disease.
For some people who are at risk of having a dominant condition, the option of finding out if you carry the gene can be helpful in planning for the future. This is known as ‘predictive’ or ‘presymptomatic’ testing. The first step in thinking through the pros and cons of genetic testing, is a consultation with a Genetic Counsellor. This type of consultation does not put you under any obligation to have testing.
Predictive genetic testing at CRGH is available to adults (over the age of 18 years), who are at risk of developing a serious late-onset genetic condition.
Please book a consultation with our Genetic Counsellor to discuss further.
